Learning disability & mental health support

Outcome-focused, not task-focused

For adults with a learning disability, autism or a mental health condition, the point of support is usually independence: cooking a meal, managing money, using a bus, holding down a college place or a job. We plan around those goals with the person, their family and their social worker.

Positive behaviour support

Where behaviour that challenges is part of the picture, we work to an agreed plan focused on understanding triggers and reducing restrictive practice — not on control.

A typical week

Support here is usually scheduled around fixed commitments — college days, a work placement, a regular club — with the carer’s role shifting from hands-on help to standing back and letting someone manage a task themselves as confidence builds. That balance, between supporting and stepping back, is reviewed regularly and adjusted as goals are met, not left fixed for the life of the package.

How we train for this

Carers in this area are trained specifically in positive behaviour support, understanding capacity and consent under the Mental Capacity Act, and working to outcome-focused goals rather than task lists — the emphasis throughout is on what someone is building towards, not just what is being done for them today.

Common questions

Learning disability & mental health support: what people ask

Is this support just supervision, or does it actually build independence?

The goal is independence, not supervision — cooking a meal, managing money, using transport, holding a college place or job. Support is measured by what someone gains, and we plan around that with the person, their family and their social worker.

How is this kind of support funded?

Usually via a council-arranged package, a direct payment, or a personal budget agreed with a social worker, occasionally alongside NHS mental health services. See paying for care for how each route works.

What is positive behaviour support?

An agreed, written approach focused on understanding what triggers behaviour that challenges and reducing it by addressing the cause — not on restraint or control. It is built with the person and reviewed, not applied to them.

Do you work directly with social workers and care managers?

Yes — for this kind of support especially, close working with the professionals already involved is standard, not an add-on.
